Matt started Judo training in 1979 with the American Institute of Judo under Senseis' Harry Azis and Billy Andrade. He later trained under Miki Takemori (daughter of the US Women's Olympic Coach), Billy Sheehan and H.Yamashita.

During his 27 years of Judo training, Matt won numerous tournaments and championships, including Silver Medals at the Am-Can International Judo Challenge, United States South Eastern International Invitational, which he also received the Bronze Medal. In regional events Matt received the silver medals for the New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts championships, and later the New York State Judo Invitational Sr. Championship. He was ranked in the top ten Junior Judokas in The United States by age fourteen.

During his 27 years of martial arts training, Matt have also studied Folk, Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling. He was inducted in the Randolph Massachusetts Hall of Fame with a record of 121 -17 in High school wrestling becoming a New England Finalists. Matt is a registered Black Belt in the United States Judo Association.
